What Are Intraocular Lenses (IOLs)?

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are small, implantable devices that are used to either replace cloudy cataract lenses or to supplement the eye’s natural lens. These long-lasting devices are typically made of materials like silicone, acrylic, or plastic, and offer refractive error correction. With innovations in IOL technology, these devices are now able to improve refractive errors—both simple and advanced—offering multifocal astigmatism, hyperopia, presbyopia, and myopia correction. At Columbus Laser & Cataract Center, we are proud to utilize the most advanced IOLs available.

Why Do Eye Surgeons Use IOLs?

Cataract surgery is one of the oldest procedures in existence, with cataract removal dating back to the 1700s, and cataract treatments, like couching, dating back to antiquity. However, before IOLs were developed, cataract removal would result in vision that was clear and cataract-free, but entirely unfocused. Following surgery, patients would have to wear high prescription eyewear to compensate for their missing lenses.

With modern advancements, however, IOLs effectively replace the eye’s natural lens, offering clear, cataract-free vision with refractive error correction. In fact, thanks to premium IOLs, many patients have reduced their reliance on glasses after surgery, with some no longer requiring prescription eyewear at all.

Which IOLs Are Right for Me?

Which IOL Is Right for Me?

When you visit our specialists for a consultation, they will thoroughly assess your eyes, listen to your visual goals, and determine which IOL is appropriate for you. Some popular IOLs include, but are not limited to:

Monofocal IOLs: These IOLs are focused at one distance. You will still require glasses to view objects at varying distances.

Toric IOLs: Toric IOLs offer visual improvements for those with astigmatism.

Multifocal IOLs: These IOLs function like bifocals or progressive lenses, allowing patients to focus at different distances and significantly reduce their reliance on glasses.

Phakic IOLs (or ICL): Used in place of laser refractive error surgery, phakic IOLs provide a solution for those with moderate-to-severe myopia.

With customizable options for every eye, IOLs offer the ultimate solution for patients who want to remove their cataracts and obtain better vision.

“I had the absolute best experience here!! They made me feel very comfortable and safe which is obviously important when it comes to any surgery. The procedure itself was quick and easy. Someone is comforting and encouraging you the entire time. They are also very transparent in what they are doing during the surgery which I loved since I was a little nervous about what was happening. Overall, I can not recommend this place enough!”
