What is LASIK?

To date, more than 10 million Americans have undergone Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) eye surgery to improve their vision. LASIK is a safe, innovative, and comfortable procedure that reshapes the cornea, providing improvements to nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Results Your Eyes Will Love

It boasts one of the highest levels of patient satisfaction among elective procedures and has delivered results that patients love for over 30 years. Plus, with innovations in technology, like the WaveLight ® Allegretto Wave ® Eye-Q Laser, LASIK is now more advanced than ever before.

Is LASIK Right for Me?

LASIK is a popular surgery among a wide array of people—ranging from artists, athletes, and celebrities, to doctors, and stay-at-home parents. But, though this procedure is popular, it is not suitable for everyone. Many factors influence the success and safety of a LASIK procedure. You may be considered a good candidate if you want to improve your vision and have:

A stable prescription: If your vision isn’t stable, you may require additional corrective surgeries as your vision changes. Because of this, you must be 18 years or older and have a stable prescription to be eligible for LASIK.

Healthy eyes: Your eyes must be healthy—free from injury, infection, and certain chronic conditions—for a safe surgical experience, recovery, and result.

Pupils that aren’t too large: Large pupils can lead to unpleasant LASIK side effects like halos, glares, starbursts, and ghost images, as well as low contrast sensitivity—especially at night.

Good overall health: Some preexisting conditions and medications can interfere with LASIK, healing, and refractive error correction. Be sure to accurately disclose your medical history to our specialists for optimal results.

A mild-to-moderate prescription: Results are more predictable for patients with mild or moderate refractive errors. Severe errors can lead to less predictable outcomes.

Appropriate cornea thickness: Since LASIK involves reshaping the cornea, there must be sufficient tissue and thickness to perform this task.

At our Ohio practice, your safety, health, and long-term vision are always our top priorities. LASIK is just one of several surgical options that can improve refractive errors—so don’t worry if you are not a good candidate. Our surgeons may be able to suggest an appropriate alternative, like Advanced Surface Treatment (AST) for your refractive errors.

How should you prepare for your LASIK consultation?

How Should You Prepare for Your LASIK Consultation?

If you are ready to begin your LASIK journey with a complimentary consultation Westerville, Ohio, remember to do the following:

Check your surgeon’s credentials: Your surgeon should be Board Certified, have ample experience, and be able to thoroughly examine your eyes to ensure that you are a good candidate for surgery. In addition, no surgeon should ever over-promise LASIK results.

Stop wearing contacts before your consultation: Contacts can distort your cornea for up to several weeks and make it difficult to accurately measure your eyes. Ask us how long you should refrain from wearing your contacts when you book your appointment.

Be transparent about your health: Always be honest with your eye doctor regarding your medical history, any medications that you may take, and your motivation for undergoing LASIK. All the information you provide will help us determine if LASIK is the best medical choice for your unique profile.

How Should You Prepare for Your LASIK Surgery?

If you are ready to undergo your surgery, remember the following for a smooth, safe, and comfortable experience:

Avoid alcohol: Do not consume alcohol the day before.

Quit smoking: Smoking can negatively impact your body’s ability to heal itself. If possible, avoid smoking in the weeks leading up to and following LASIK.

Stop wearing makeup: Do not use any makeup, creams, or lotions the day before the procedure. Ensure your face is thoroughly cleaned from any product residue since products can all increase the risk of infection.

Wear clean, comfortable clothing: Avoid any clothing with loose fibers (knit sweaters) or clothing with pet hair on it.

Arrive early: Arriving early gives you time to relax, get comfortable, and fill out  paperwork before your procedure.

Arrange transportation beforehand: You will not be able to drive immediately following your surgery. Arrange for someone else to pick you up (and take you to your follow-up appointment) until you are cleared to drive.

Frequently Asked Health Questions

What happens during LASIK?

LASIK is quick and comfortable. Before, we apply numbing drops so you feel no pain and administer a sedative to help you relax. Then, we stabilize your head and use a small device to keep your eyes open during the procedure. (You don’t have to worry about blinking during LASIK!)

The entire surgery typically takes between 10 to 15 minutes for each eye. During this time, you may experience a sensation of pressure as our surgeons use lasers to create a flap on the top layer of your cornea, reshape the cornea underneath, and then replace the flap. At Columbus Laser, we use state-of-the-art lasers that are optimized for safety and precision, so you can sit back and relax as we expertly work to improve your vision.

What is LASIK recovery like?

Recovery from LASIK is generally short and mild. After, you may experience itchiness. However, it’s important to avoid touching or rubbing them since your cornea is still healing. We will provide you with an eye guard to help keep you from injuring your eye or interfering with the healing process. After 24 to 48 hours, we will assess again and provide any additional instructions for your safety and comfort.

During this time, you may feel uncomfortable, experience sensitivity to light, or have blurry vision and watery eyes. This is normal. Most of these symptoms are resolved within the first week after. By carefully following our post-operative instructions in the upcoming days, weeks, and months, you can help expedite the healing process and obtain your healthiest, clearest visual outcome.

People are happy to know that they can typically return to their normal activities, like driving or going to work, just a day or two after their procedures. However, playing sports or wearing makeup should not be resumed for at least two weeks following. While other activities, like swimming, should not be attempted for at least four weeks—and should always involve goggles. Our specialists will provide you with all the information you need to keep you safe and infection-free post-surgery.

A LASIK procedure is an investment in your confidence, health, and independence. Over time, LASIK can save you money, cutting costs on glasses and contacts that add up over the years. How many years does LASIK last?

Many people believe the myth that LASIK results wear off. However, this is untrue. The LASIK procedure makes permanent changes in the shape of the corneal tissue. After studying your eyes, taking precise measurements, and evaluating your prescription, our surgeons precisely reshape your cornea to correct refractive errors. This surgery normally delivers lasting refractive error improvements—based on your vision at the time of your surgery.

It is possible that your prescription might change over the years. However, this does not necessarily mean that your results are wearing off. If your refractive error was going to change naturally, then this is unrelated to the LASIK procedure. This is why we recommend LASIK for patients who have stable prescriptions. Some patients who experience significant prescription changes after LASIK may require an enhancement. This is a similar laser correction surgery that further corrects refractive errors.

LASIK results are permanent, but you should expect to deal with age-related vision changes. For instance, as you grow older, you will experience difficulty with up-close focusing. This is called presbyopia and happens to everyone. We know now that this is the first sign of age-related change. Ultimately, this will lead to cataract changes and possibly cataract surgery. Fortunately, LASIK does not prevent patients from having successful cataract surgery.

What age is best for LASIK?

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to age and refractive surgery—only general guidelines. As long as you are eligible for LASIK (have a stable prescription, have a thick enough cornea, etc.), they can receive it. LASIK is appropriate for those 18 and older; however, depending on the patient, it may be advisable to wait a few extra years if there is concern about changing prescriptions. This is because people do not always have the stable prescription needed for LASIK until they are in their early to mid-20s.

When a patient is young, refractive surgery provides long-lasting benefits. Patients who choose LASIK in their 20s or 30s can have decades of clearer vision and less reliance on glasses to look forward to. As people age, they will experience presbyopia, which is a natural change in vision. Presbyopia is why older people need reading glasses for up-close vision. This aging-related change happens to everyone—whether you have had refractive surgery or not.

Patient Care Testimonials

“Wow. I was a little nervous for the first cataract surgery. You know, the unknown. The staff was wonderfully reassuring and the experience was amazing. 24 hours after surgery, I could see perfectly with the operated on eye. Then, knowing the procedure was painless I went back and enjoyed the experience on the second eye 3 weeks later. 24 hours later that eye was perfect and clear as well. My vision is better than I had hoped. Dr. Beran and all of the Staff are wonderfully skilled.”

5-Star Review

“I had the absolute best experience here! I’ve been wanting to get LASIK forever and every single employee here was so knowledgeable about all of my options. They made me feel very comfortable and safe which is obviously important when it comes to any surgery. The procedure itself was quick and easy. They are very transparent with what they are doing and everyone was so excited on my behalf of how much better day-to-day life would be post-surgery. The price was competitive & they have multiple zero-interest financing options that help make it affordable. If you are thinking of LASIK you should talk to their staff, definitely the best option in the greater Columbus area.”

5-Star Review

“Dr. Weber performed surgery on my left eye. Being a big chicken I was nervous. No worries. The staff was all very kind and supportive and the anesthesia was great. I felt very little discomfort and remember very little about the procedure. I had the corrective lens which is not covered by Medicare. The next day I went back for my follow up appointment. They removed the protective clear plastic apparatus. I could see perfectly without glasses. Can’t wait to have the right eye corrected!”
