How to Prepare for LASIK Surgery
So, you’ve decided to undergo LASIK eye surgery and improve your vision. Congratulations! Here are some steps you need to take to prepare for your free initial consultation and the procedure itself:
In the weeks before your LASIK evaluation:
Stop wearing your contacts
During your free initial evaluation, your eye surgeon will take measurements of your eyes to determine if you’re a good candidate for LASIK. If you use contacts, you’ll need to stop wearing them in the weeks leading up to this meeting. Contact lenses distort the shape of your cornea which can lead to incorrect measurements during your eye evaluation. Incorrect measurements will negatively impact your vision results.
The amount of time you need to refrain from wearing your contacts before your consultation depends on what kind of contact lenses you wear:
- Soft contact lenses: stop wearing them for 2 weeks before your LASIK evaluation
- Toric soft lenses or RGP lenses: stop wearing them for 3 weeks before your LASIK evaluation
- Hard lenses: stop wearing them for 4 weeks before your LASIK evaluation
During your LASIK evaluation:
Tell your surgeon about your eye health and medications
During your initial LASIK evaluation, your surgeon will perform a thorough eye evaluation and ask you about your past and present eye health. It’s important to tell your surgeon about all the medications you’re currently taking and if you’re allergic to any medications.
Your eye surgeon can answer any questions you have about LASIK eye surgery during your free initial evaluation. We encourage you to ask as many questions as you need to because the more informed you are, the more comfortable you will be on the day of your procedure.
Before your LASIK eye surgery:
You will need to arrange for someone to drop you off and pick you up on the day of your procedure. Your vision will be blurry after the procedure, and the medicine we give you to help you relax will impair your ability to drive. You may be able to resume driving the day after surgery if your vision has improved and you are cleared by your surgeon, but you cannot drive in the 24 hours immediately after your LASIK eye surgery.
Stop wearing eye makeup
The day before your surgery, you will need to stop using makeup, creams, lotions and perfumes. These beauty products can increase the risk of eye infection during and after your procedure. On the day of your surgery, make sure you thoroughly clean your face to remove any makeup residue or debris near your eyes. You may also receive different specific instructions from your surgeon prior to surgery.
Wear comfortable, non-shedding clothes
On the day of your surgery, make sure you wear comfortable, non-shedding clothes. You don’t want loose fibers or pet hair floating around during your surgery.
Eat and drink normally
There is no need to fast on the day of your surgery. Eat and drink normally, but do not consume alcohol the day before or the day of your surgery. Don’t take medication that can cause drowsiness either.
Get there early
On the day of your LASIK procedure, make sure you arrive at Columbus Laser & Cataract Center early. Arriving early will give you plenty of time to get comfortable and fill out any necessary paperwork.
