Can Cataracts Grow Back? And Other Common Questions About Surgery

Jun 16, 2022

Happy Cataract Awareness Month! This June, the Columbus Laser & Cataract Center team wants to bring you all the information you need to know about cataracts and cataract surgery.

Is cataract surgery scary?

For many people, the idea of any surgery is intimidating. This anxiety is completely normal! But we want to assure you that cataract surgery is one of the safest procedures in modern medicine with a high success rate. When you choose cataract surgery from Dr. Beran or Dr. Weber at Columbus Laser & Cataract Center, you’re in the hands of distinguished experts.

Fortunately, cataract surgery is not painful. We sedate patients and apply an anesthetic to the eye before the operation. As long as you follow your surgeon’s instructions, the surgery and its recovery are quick and comfortable.

What happens during cataract surgery?

A cataract develops when the eye’s naturally clear lens becomes cloudy with age, leading to decreased and blurry vision. During cataract surgery, the cataract (i.e., the clouded natural lens) is removed from the eye and replaced with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). IOLs can improve vision dramatically by correcting refractive errors such as astigmatism, presbyopia, myopia, and hyperopia.

Can cataracts grow back?

Our surgeons remove the natural lens during cataract surgery, so cataracts can’t “grow back.” Some people may experience cloudiness after surgery with similar symptoms to cataracts. This phenomenon is a clouding of a membrane around the implanted IOL, a process called posterior capsular opacification (PCO). A follow-up laser surgery called a YAG capsulotomy treats PCO. This procedure is incredibly convenient and low risk, taking only a few minutes. Afterward, you’ll experience clearer, improved vision.
