What happens during cataract surgery?
A cataract develops when the eye’s naturally clear lens becomes cloudy with age, leading to decreased and blurry vision. During cataract surgery, the cataract (i.e., the clouded natural lens) is removed from the eye and replaced with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). IOLs can improve vision dramatically by correcting refractive errors such as astigmatism, presbyopia, myopia, and hyperopia.
Can cataracts grow back?

This phenomenon is a clouding of a membrane around the implanted IOL, a process called posterior capsular opacification (PCO). A follow-up laser surgery called a YAG capsulotomy treats PCO.
